Wisdom of Fiber

I woke up one morning this past January with the idea for this piece, a cross section of an apple with some blossoms. In the dead of winter with six inches of snow and ice on the ground, thinking about apple blossoms felt good. For the last few years, in my creative endeavors I have been working within the structure of mandalas. A mandala, typically a geometric form often a circle or a square, is used in a number of spiritual traditions to focus attention and aid in meditation. For me, creating a painting, like the one here, is a meditative experience. While I usually tend to be very serious, for this one I wanted to be a bit light-hearted, possibly add a touch of humor. Hence, the title, “The Wisdom of Fiber.” Of course, the symbol of the apple in the story in Genisis pops up. It reminds me that I can choose what’s good for me. Since my Parkinson’s diagnosis, I’ve become an apple lover–an apple a day, so they say. I’ve read about research on the possible gut-brain connection
