Great Blue Heron

I paint birds of all kinds: hummingbirds, shorebirds, birds of prey, and the small, easily overlooked birds that fly quietly through our landscapes. Each one is colorful and worthy of attention.

I’ve been a birder for over thirty years and have worked in watercolor for the past five. As a self-taught painter, I move between careful observation and expressive freedom. Some paintings closely follow the field marks of a specific bird, while others loosen into unexpected purples, blues, and reds. Both styles bring me joy.

Each painting begins with a moment of noticing a flicker of movement in the trees or a bird resting briefly on a branch. From that encounter, I work to translate what I’ve seen onto paper, letting watercolor flow and respond in its own way. I’m interested in the space where birds moving through the world meet paint moving across the paper. Painting offers me a brief, intimate glimpse into the lives of birds, and a way to share my enthusiasm for birds with others.
