Close Tight the Curtain (To Fancy Pants)

What silver bell kissed by butterfly wing,
Aroused the cherubs, induced them to sing?
What sweet chorus set Luna in motion,
Shifted the tides of amorous ocean,
Uplifted the scallop in which you stood,
Brought you to me, in your fair maidenhood?

Zephyr, observing this fateful event,
With breath did offer his loving consent.
Cupid assented and pulled back his bow,
Stitched us together with loving arrow.

Gods united to bring us together,
Offer to us this greatest of treasures.
Anger the gods, rip love asunder,
Or fasten our hearts, vast riches to plunder?

When Carter at last made his stony breach,
Saw Tut’s golden treasures, just out of reach.
Did he turn away, mumbling of curses,
Or double his efforts, fill lordly purses?
Carter knew then what I say to you now:
There’s no guarantee t’anyone, anyhow.

All are allotted a time in the sun.
All shuffle off when last breath’s done.
What comes after — unclear and uncertain.
Let us make haste, my dear, and close tight the curtain.
