Torrance York

Torrance York’s photographs elevate often-overlooked moments in daily life into a place of thought and meditation, pointing to universal themes.

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2015, York integrates this life-altering experience into her creative practice, harnessing the transformative power of visual storytelling. In 2022, she published her monograph, Semaphore (Kehrer Verlag), about the shift in her perspective after being diagnosed. The recent profusion of literature in neuroaesthetics, heralding the health benefits of the arts for our minds and bodies, has situated York’s Semaphore project in a broader context.

York earned a BA from Yale and an MFA in photography from Rhode Island School of Design. Semaphore solo exhibits include: Danforth Art Museum, Framingham, MA; Rick Wester Fine Art in Chelsea, NYC; and the United Nations, NYC. This fall, she exhibited 52 images from the series at St. Lawrence University.

Collections holding her work include: Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA; Montefiore Einstein, NY; Wieland Collection at the Warehouse, Atlanta, GA. York was a resident artist at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center and received a Connecticut artist fellowship grant in 2010.

York has presented Semaphore at the 2023 World Parkinson’s Congress, to Parkinson’s support groups, and to Medical School Neurology Departments’ Grand Rounds at UVA, Wake Forest, and UCLA, sharing her experience as an artist and person with Parkinson’s.
