Herring, Baleen, Bubbles and Fin

Sometimes, no matter how well you plan, you find yourself without the right lens for the perfect shot. That’s what happened this day as we set out to photograph humpback whales engaged in the mesmerizing phenomenon known as bubble-net feeding. Expecting the whales to be far from the boat, I had my telephoto lens mounted — perfect for distance, but not for what came next. Without warning, a group of humpbacks erupted in the ocean right in front of us, sending spray, herring, and bubbles flying in
